Batch Upload Agricultural Image Dataset to Qdrant

Automate the process of batch uploading an image dataset from Google Cloud Storage to Qdrant. This workflow generates embeddings with Voyage AI and prepares the data for machine learning tasks like anomaly detection and KNN classification.

Overview

Automates the ingestion, embedding, and batch uploading of an agricultural image dataset to a Qdrant vector database for AI-driven image analysis.

🧠 Description & Use Case

This workflow provides a robust pipeline for populating a Qdrant vector database with an image dataset stored in Google Cloud Storage. It automates fetching images, generating high-quality multimodal embeddings using Voyage AI, and uploading the data in efficient batches. This template is the foundational step for building advanced AI applications like anomaly detection or K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) image classification.

🔄 How It Works:

  1. Trigger & Configuration: The workflow is initiated manually and starts by setting key variables in the Qdrant cluster variables node, including the Qdrant cluster URL, collection name (agricultural-crops), and batch size.

  2. Qdrant Collection Setup:

    • It first checks if the specified Qdrant collection already exists using an HTTP request.
    • If the collection doesn't exist, the Create Qdrant Collection node creates it, defining the vector parameters (size and distance metric).
    • A Payload index on crop_name is then created. This optimizes future queries that filter or group by the crop type, which is crucial for the subsequent anomaly detection and classification workflows.
  3. Data Ingestion & Preparation:

    • The Google Cloud Storage node fetches all image files from the agricultural-crops directory.
    • The Get fields for Qdrant node processes each file, constructing a public URL and extracting the cropName from its folder path.
    • A Filter node specifically removes all images of tomatoes. This is a deliberate step to prepare the dataset for a future anomaly detection task, where a tomato image will be treated as an unknown anomaly.
  4. Batching and Embedding:

    • A Code node groups the filtered images into batches and generates a unique UUID for each point, as required by Qdrant.
    • The Batches in the API's format node structures the data into the JSON format required by both the Voyage AI and Qdrant APIs.
    • The Embed crop image node sends the image batches to Voyage AI's multimodal embedding endpoint to generate vector representations of each image.
  5. Upload to Qdrant:

    • Finally, the Batch Upload to Qdrant node takes the generated embeddings, their corresponding UUIDs, and the metadata (payload) and uploads them to the Qdrant collection in a single, efficient API call.

✅ Real-World Use Cases:

  • Foundation for Anomaly Detection: Create a baseline dataset of known image classes (e.g., different crops) to later identify images that don't fit into any existing category (e.g., a diseased plant, a wrong crop type).
  • Building Image Similarity Search: Once the data is in Qdrant, you can instantly find visually similar images by providing an input image and searching for its nearest neighbors in the vector space.
  • Dataset Preparation for Classification: This workflow prepares the data needed for a KNN (k-nearest neighbors) classifier, which can categorize new images based on the most common class among their closest matches in the database.
  • Automated MLOps Pipelines: Automate the data ingestion and preparation phase for any computer vision model, ensuring that your production models always have access to the latest, correctly processed data.

Instructions

Basic steps

  1. Download workflow JSON
  2. Import into n8n
  3. Configure node parameters as needed
  4. Test and enable the workflow

💡 Tips

After importing, verify all connectors and credentials match your environment.

In this particular template, we work with [crops dataset](https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/mdwaquarazam/agricultural-crops-image-classification). However, it's analogous to [lands dataset](https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/apollo2506/landuse-scene-classification), and in general, it's adaptable to any dataset consisting of image URLs (as the following pipelines are).\n\n* First, check for an existing Qdrant collection to use; otherwise, create it here. Additionally, when creating the collection, we'll create a [payload index](https://qdrant.tech/documentation/concepts/indexing/#payload-index), which is required for a particular type of Qdrant requests we will use later.\n* Next, import all (dataset) images from Google Storage but keep only non-tomato-related ones (for anomaly detection testing).\n* Create (per batch) embeddings for all imported images using the Voyage AI multimodal embeddings API.\n* Finally, upload the resulting embeddings and image descriptors to Qdrant via batch uploading."
